Just moved into a house a couple weeks ago in western Michigan, and one of the multitudinous problems we are encountering is this: When you turn the shower on, the sink sometimes bubbles up sewer-smelling gas for a few seconds. It stops quickly, but it smells gross and seems like it could be indicative of a larger problem. [Here are some images of the problem plumbing](http://imgur.com/a/EMxxb). I recently moved into a new home. I have a small pantry closet in the kitchen. Over the past few months, I've noticed that this pantry gets quite warm and chocolates and other food have actually melted. I did some investigation and found that the exhaust flue for the furnace and water heater (which are in the basement) runs in a chase that's behind this pantry. Here's a simple diagram of the layout: http://i.imgur.com/OBCF8bl.png I'd like to prevent this pantry from heating up. I'm considering... I just replaced a 30 year old 80% natural gas furnace with a new Rheem 80% two stage furnace. I opted for 80% over 90+ because my land is worth several times what the house is - next owner will likely tear it down, although I have no plans to move as of now. I've never had high gas bills, so I doubt the efficiency gains would ever pay back. I don't like unsealed combustion indoors or the depressurization caused by power vent appliances. That was almost enough to drive me to a 90% unit, but I ju... I did a quick search and didn't see this immediately so apologies if it's been covered before: I am a new homeowner and was replacing all my vent covers of my house with new ones that weren't all painted over with years of paint. So I own a 1960s ranch in the midwest. Ever since moving in the humidity has been pretty hard to control by AC alone and the HVAC seems to work harder than it should for 1,000 sqft house. Been trying to increase comfort/health and reduce cost. The backstory: House was pretty generic 2x4 walls with R6 insulation, tar paper "vapor barrier", jalousie windows in basement, natural draft furnace and water heater, etc. Well after 3 years I've air sealed the attic, blown in insulation, replaced the f... Hello plumbers, I'm not sure if I should be contacting a plumber or an HVAC technician for my questions, but I'm really lost here. There's nothing wrong yet, but I want to be prepared just in case something does break so I know what to do. I bought my townhouse in southern California 2 years ago, it was built in 2008. Now as far as I was aware, I thought it as heated using a traditional gas-powered furnace, but I was an idiot and I never really looked into the heating system before I bought th...
